How Silk Flowers are made?
1. Raw Materials
Nowadays most of the Silk Flowers are made of Polyester fabric in white color because of the cost consideration and its ability to accept dyes and glues. However, other materials are also used for making the petals, leaves or stems, such as plastic, latex, paper, cotton, rubber, satin, sateen, polyresin, etc.
2. Designing
Basically silk flower designing is a process of replicating nature flowers. For example, if a designer is going to make a silk rose, he may pick up a real rose and dissect it into different parts to be used as models. The designer then make patterns according to those models. Of course, the different sizes has to be made, the patterns can be enlarged or decreased by a copy machine conveniently. Or designers could create the flower shapes according to their creativity using the natural flowers as their guidelines.
3. Die-cutting or Laser-cutting
The Dies are made according to the patterns the designer has made. Then you use these Dies to cut the fabric material into the shape of flower parts such as petals, leaves. However, nowadays the Laser-cutting technology has been introduced to the Silk Flowers industry. The advantages of Laser-cutting are revolutionary. Firstly the silk flower manufacturers don't have to spend a lot of time and money on making those cutting dies any more. All they have to do is inputting the patterns into the computerized Laser-cutting machine and push a button to start the laser speed cutting. Secondly it solve the annoying fabric's fray problem for good. Therefore, the manufacturing cost has been decreased while the quality has been increased.
4. Color-dyeing
After the cutting, the petals are dyed by hand one by one, piece by piece. The skilled workers use piant brushes or cotton balls to paint the colors onto the petals. It is a time consumed job. Dyeing a single petal could take an hour or so by a skilled worker. This is the reason why all the Silk Flowers and plants are made in those low labor cost countries.
5. Heat and Press treatment
In order to form those shapes, curves and wrinkles, the petals are put into moulds to which the high heat and high pressure are applied.
6. Wiring and Gluing
After heat and press treatment, thin wires might be applied to petals and leaves if necessary. Then glue is applied to fix the wire in its place. Again, these process are all handled by hand piece by piece.
7. Assembling
Several individual Silk Flower and sprays of leaves might be assembled together to make a single stem, a branch, a bush or a complete Silk Plant.
